Training & Credentialing

Louisiana law requires Justices of the Peace and Constables to complete ongoing training to maintain their authority and eligibility for state supplemental pay. The Attorney General’s office conducts these courses and tracks compliance.

Every Justice of the Peace and Constable is required to attend at least one training course every other year.

  • New Officials: Are required to attend the first training course available after taking office (within six months).
  • Continuing Education: Are required to attend once a year thereafter (or at least every other year).

The Attorney General conducts these courses in various locations throughout the state.

Justices of the Peace may not issue arrest warrants until they complete the Attorney General’s Arrest Warrants Course and receive a certificate of completion.

  • Frequency: This course is provided annually along with the general JP training.
  • Requirement: Each JP is required to attend this course every other year to maintain the authority to sign and issue criminal arrest warrants.
  • Content: The course covers the preparation and issuance of arrest warrants and is taught by assistant attorneys general.

Failure to attend the required training has financial consequences:

  • Supplemental Pay: If a JP or Constable fails to attend the required training every other year, they are not eligible to earn or receive state supplemental pay until they attend a course and receive a certificate of completion.

The Justice of the Peace Training Course typically includes instruction on:

  • Venue & Jurisdiction: Where cases may be heard and what types of cases are allowed.
  • Civil Procedure: Elements of a cause of action, deadlines, and trial conduct.
  • Duties & Responsibilities: The functions of the JP and Constable offices.
  • Trial Demonstrations: Practical examples of court proceedings.

At the conclusion of the course, the Attorney General presents a certificate of completion to each attendee.
